The Respiratory Therapist role involves providing comprehensive respiratory care, coordinating with healthcare teams to ensure the best patient experience. Key responsibilities include administering respiratory procedures and modalities in accordance with established standards, policies, and procedures.

Using evidence-based practices, clinical decision making, and skilled communication, the therapist leads efforts to create a safe patient environment and exceptional patient outcomes across the continuum. They operate specialized ventilators in critical and non-critical care venues, assist physicians with bedside procedures, provide medication treatments and therapies per physician order, and educate patients on disease management.

As a Respiratory Therapist, one must be able to adapt to various service areas, perform tasks as required by assignment, and maintain performance standards and organizational behaviors. This includes promoting a culture of safety, reporting patient safety events, and identifying potential safety issues for corrective action.

This role requires effective communication, feedback, and conflict resolution skills, as well as problem-solving and decision-making abilities for patient care and equipment use. Proficient computer skills, including electronic mail and medical record systems, are also essential. Human relation skills are necessary to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with patients, team members, and physicians.

A Respiratory Therapist must possess knowledge of growth and development over the life span, assess data reflective of the patient's status, and interpret information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs.

This job requires physical demands such as lifting 50-pound objects from knee to waist, pushing/pulling while utilizing 30 pounds of force occasionally for long distances, and performing sliding transfers of 150-pound patients. The ability to work collaboratively with others, take initiative, and prioritize tasks in an environment with frequent interruptions is also necessary.
